Inmate Makes Salvation Decision With Aid of 2001 Evangel

By Ron Kopczick | May 29, 2009

key-bearers-logo.JPGA Texas inmate picks up a copy of the Pentecostal Evangel and after reading the magazine decides to commit his life to Jesus Christ. It happens several times every day in correctional institutions throughout the United States. But this particular instance is far from typical.

The prisoner is incarcerated in Lubbock, nearly 600 miles from the church that provided the Evangel. And the magazine itself is nearly 8 years old. How the Sept. 30, 2001, edition of the Evangel made its way from Grand Parkway Church in Porter, a small community just north of Houston, to the plains of western Texas is anyone’s guess. What’s clear, however, is the power of the printed page. Especially when it has a divine appointment.

Since 2004, approximately 6,100 other men and women serving time have reported making Jesus their Savior with the assistance of the Evangel. Thousands more have drawn inspiration from the publication to remain steady in the Christian faith while finishing their sentences. It’s unknown where these members of America’s forgotten society would be spiritually if it weren’t for the caring churches and individuals who provide a witness and encouragement via the Evangel.

During the past 13-plus years, more than 7.9 million Evangels have been provided to jails and prisons through the Key Bearers program. Millions of additional magazines have been supplied directly to local correctional facilities by neighboring congregations. All in all, the distribution ministry has proven to be powerful and life-changing.

Every dollar donated to Key Bearers provides four copies of the Evangel and a copy is usually read by several inmates. To learn more or become a part of this outreach, visit the Evangel home page at www.tpe.ag.org and click on the Key Bearers icon.
